Workshop Description:

This workshop begins by covering the basis of gender and sexuality, discussing the importance of terminology, and the differences between sex and gender, and attraction and sexuality. We also explore how gender can translate into pronouns, the different pronouns people may use to describe themselves, how to use different pronouns, and why this matters. We will discuss what it means to be an ally to the whole 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allyship within the world.

In the final section, we deconstruct Bible and hold a discussion around the “clobber” passages often weaponized against the queer and trans community. We explore the harmful effects of conversion therapy, and spiritual and religious trauma. We also discuss some of the affirmative passages in the Bible, and what it means to send a different message as a church, including some interactive scenarios and tips on creating safer churches.

Bios of the Presenters:

Chris Brouillard-Coyle (They/Them), BMath, BEd, MDiv, MA

Chris is an Anglican priest who is a founding member and co-chair of social and ecological justice committees for the regional church. They have provided significant leadership in challenging all people to honour the gifts of diversity. Under Chris’ guidance, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Essex has become known for its inclusivity and openness to welcome, affirm, and celebrate the gifts of all people. Recently, Chris has provided one-on-one spiritual care for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. They also co-facilitate a group for parents, family, and allies of Queer and Trans individuals. As a parent of a Queer and Trans person, Chris has welcomed a diversity of individuals into their home and continues to advocate on behalf of marginalised communities.

Sydney Brouillard-Coyle (Ney/Nem), BMus

I am a queer, asexual, transgender, and non-binary person with a deep passion for social justice. I recently completed my Bachelor of Music from the University of Windsor, and am finishing up my second degree in Women & Gender Studies with a minor in Political Science. I currently work as the Music Director at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Essex and as the Education Lead at Trans Wellness Ontario. I have been involved in many different church committees, including being co-chair and founder of Proud Anglicans of Huron; I was a member of Public Witness for Social and Ecological Justice, and have served as a youth and lay delegate to my diocesan synod for five years. I also was the youth delegate to General Synod in 2019. I am deeply passionate about the community - particularly in regards to equity, trans and queer rights and representation, mental health, poverty and homelessness, the environment, and youth. I believe that education is the key to reducing ignorance and creating safer spaces for everyone.
